Why geran and hakmilik are not interchangeable
Hakmilik is the registered ownership interest in the land. Geran refers to one particular form of that title. In everyday speech Malaysians say geran for any title document, but the official document states the specific type.
This matters because the type of title determines where a transfer is filed and what approvals are needed. A title registered at the district Land Office is not handled in the same place as one registered at state level.

- Gadaian rendered as mortgage. The Malaysian land system uses a charge, and it works differently from an English mortgage
